How to identify squirrels in your home or garden?
Squirrels are intelligent robust creatures that damage homes and can be very tricky to eradicate. Here are some signs to look for when trying to identify a squirrel infestation.
Squirrels are most active around dawn so you may hear signs of movement or scratching in lofts, walls and ceilings. As Squirrel incisor teeth continually grow they love to gnaw, evidence of this can frequently be found by way of wooden beams and wiring being chewed in lofts. Also foot prints and tail swipes can sometimes be seen in very dusty areas. When nesting in loft spaces they create igloo like structures out of insulation.
How fast can a squirrel infestation grow?
Squirrels have 2 litters per year. The Litter size is 3 to 7 kittens. The female is pregnant for 6 weeks. The infants are weaned and ready to leave the nest at around 10 weeks and will be sexually mature and ready to mate within 11 months.
So, if we are talking about squirrels in your loft it will be between 2 and 9. If we are talking about outside it is very difficult to estimate numbers as squirrel territory’s overlap so you will often have many visiting your garden.
